Parade Exclusive: Parmalee Hosts Feels Like Carolina Homecoming at Alma Mater ECU

At first glance, the band Parmalee appears to be four guys who love making music together (including hits like “Musta Had a Good Time” and “Close Your Eyes”). And while that’s true, the band members–brothers Matt and Scott Thomas (lead vocals/ guitar & drums, respectively), cousin Barry Knox (bass) and life long best friend Josh McSwain (guitar)–have been through more in their 15 years together than most bands will endure in a lifetime.

The foursome began playing together while attending Eastern Carolina University, where they would throw field concerts called “Uncle Ron’s Parties” for thousands of local fans. After college, the group went pro, making the rounds performing in small clubs and lounges. It was after one of those shows in September 2010 that the band was involved in an attempted robbery and shootout on its RV outside a club. Scott Thomas was shot three times and airlifted to a hospital in Charlotte, where he was given a 5 percent chance of life by doctors, but miraculously survived after spending 35 days in the hospital, ten of which he was in a coma.

Five years and thousands of shows later, Parmalee hosted a homecoming–literally–at ECU. Last weekend, the band hosted the first-ever Feels Like Carolina Homecoming show on the university’s campus at the Minges Coliseum.

“It was amazing. It was everything we hoped it would be,” said singer Matt Thomas. “It was something we’ve always worked for, and a lot of work went into it. We never thought or knew when it was gonna happen. I mean when we came on stage and saw the people…The crowd was great and it was a great turnout.”

The night was a special one, and one the band hopes to make a tradition. “We want to make it an annual thing, and bring more people in and have it get bigger and bigger,” he said. “We are already working on Feels Like Carolina Homecoming for next year.”

And Thomas has a message for the family members and fans who braved traffic jams to spend the evening with the band. “I just want to thank everybody for coming out to the show and making it a lifelong dream for us.”

(NEW YORK, NY)  — It was a whirlwind 48 hours in the Big Apple for Stoney Creek Records act Parmalee. The chart-topping foursome made its debut on NBC’s TODAY show on Tuesday (9/8), becoming the first musical guest to perform on the show’s brand new set.

Following a 3:30 am wake-up call, Parmalee chatted with hosts Al Roker, Natalie Morales, Tamron Hall and Willie Geist in the 9 o’clock hour. The platinum selling act then performed its third consecutive hit “Already Callin’ You Mine,” which earned a 102% sales increase on the Nielsen Soundscan Country Singles Chart this week.

“Everybody who is anyone in America comes here and there’s so much energy in the studio between the guests and the hosts. You feel like you’re a part of the daily excitement that goes on in households across America. I mean, we just played the $%@# TODAY show – what more can I say?!?!” said lead singer Matt Thomas shortly after Parmalee’s debut.

Parmalee was early-to-rise again the next morning (9/9) when the band headed to Major League Baseball’s television headquarters in Secaucus, NJ for an appearance on the MLB Network’s live weekday morning show, MLB CENTRAL.

The band (comprised of brothers Matt and Scott Thomas, cousin Barry Knox and longtime friend Josh McSwain) chatted about their humble beginnings in Parmele, NC (population 268), their favorite MLB teams and their nerve-wracking experience performing the national anthem at Wrigley Field this past April. Parmalee then treated hosts Mark DeRosa, Matt Vasgersian and Lauren Shehadi to a trendsetting acoustic performance of “Already Callin’ You Mine,” marking the very first musical performance in the history of the show.

While touring the MLB Network headquarters afterwards, Parmalee took a break to play ball inside the MLB’s fully functioning indoor baseball field, also known as Studio 42. Parmalee bassist Barry Knox scored a homerun hit that was captured on camera and aired on the network’s live show!

“If only Barry could play bass the way he can hit a ball. I’m afraid he may quit the band now!” joked Parmalee guitarist Josh McSwain.

Parmalee is set to perform “Already Callin’ You Mine” on NBC’s TODAY Show

PARMALEE'S CAREER COMES FULL-CIRCLE WITH NBC¹s TODAY SHOW DEBUT Tuesday, September 8th

Parmalee is set to perform its latest hit “Already Callin’ You Mine” on NBC’s TODAY Show on Tuesday, September 8th. The performance will mark the chart-topping group’s inaugural appearance on one of America’s leading morning shows and the timing couldn’t be more full-circle for Country music’s ‘band of brothers.’

This September will mark the five-year anniversary of the armed robbery that nearly ended Parmalee’s music career and altered the band’s lives forever. On the eve of signing its first major label deal Parmalee  — brothers Matt and Scott Thomas; cousin Barry Knox; and friend Josh McSwain — performed one last string of shows in order to fund its way back to Nashville. After performing in Rock Hill, SC, two assailants attempted to rob Parmalee’s RV at gunpoint, leaving drummer Scott Thomas shot three times and fighting for his life. The band pulled together to help nurse Thomas back to health. Four surgeries and months of rehabilitation later, Parmalee finally made its way back to Nashville to sign its record deal.

“It’s crazy to sit back and think about what we’ve been through to where we are now,” says Parmalee lead singer Matt Thomas. “Parmalee has come a long way  – not only from that night – but also from the days of working as loggers, furniture re-possessors and pizza makers just so we could support our band. Now we are about to perform on the TODAY show. It’s just unreal. We are so grateful to be here.”

PEOPLE.COM REVEALS EXCLUSIVE STORIES AND PHOTOS FROM BAND’S LIFE-CHANGING TRIP ABROAD

Parmalee-Navy-Entertainment-Tour

Parmalee recently returned to U.S. soil after embarking on its first Navy Entertainment Tour, taking the chart-toppers through six countries in nine days to perform for our U.S. military troops.

Also the band’s first-ever trip overseas, the whirlwind journey took them through England, France, Ethiopia, Qatar, Bahrain, Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti, Africa, as well as aboard the USS Dewey, a destroyer ship in the Persian Gulf, and the USS Carl Vinson, an aircraft carrier ship.

Today, People.com revealed exclusive stories and photos from the band of brothers’ life-changing Navy Entertainment Tour. Read the full article HERE.

“Probably the coolest, most touching moment is when we went to play on the battleship the USS Dewey,” lead singer Matt Thomas told People. “We were on the big aircraft carrier, the USS Carl Vinson and then we took a helicopter to the small battleship. They told us when we got on that battleship that some of these people have been active 14 years and have never had anybody come visit them. The entertainment always goes to the big ships, but nobody ever comes to the small ships.”

“Already Callin’ You Mine” Lyric Video

Rising Stars’ New Single Heralded By Billboard,

and USA TODAY

(NASHVILLE, TN) – Stoney Creek Records’ Parmalee stormed out of the gate today with new single “Already Callin’ You Mine.”  The follow-up to the band’s recent Top 3 hit, “Close Your Eyes” debuted with 48 first week reporting stations— the band’s highest first week add total at U.S. Country radio to date.

With an undeniably catchy, up-tempo hook, “Already Callin’ You Mine” tells the universal story of young love that falls hard and fast.

“It’s a song about that crucial moment when you change your Facebook status from ‘single’ to ‘in a relationship. It’s a total game changer,” describes Matt Thomas, lead singer for Parmalee.

Today, People Country got in on the action, revealing four new “Parmalee-fied” Facebook relationship status options – one for each member of the ‘band of brothers’ who won over the hearts of Country music fans with the multi-week chart topper “Carolina.”  Find out who’s “In The Doghouse” and who’s “Pharrelled” in the candid feature that also premieres the lyric video for “Already Callin’ You Mine” here: http://smarturl.it/PeopleACYMLyricVideo

Co-penned by Parmalee lead singer Matt Thomas and bass player Barry Knox (alongside hit songwriters Phil O’Donnell and Wade Kirby), “Already Callin’ You Mine” is winning over fans and critics alike.  USA Today highlighted the song as one of the best from Parmalee’s debut album, FEELS LIKE CAROLINA, while Billboard called the song “a buoyant hit-to-be.”

In a recent artist profile on Parmalee, The Huffington Post declared the new single “has the same catchy beat their music has become known for, with lyrics that make you feel like they’re talking directly to you.”
